Art Deco Carved Onyx and Diamond Ring in 18 Karat Gold

Art Deco Carved Onyx and Diamond Ring in 18 Karat Gold

Onyx Double Meaning

Black onyx has been used throughout history to represent mourning.  During the Victorian period, mourning lockets, brooches and rings were popular symbols of grief.  Alternatively, many believed the dark color of onyx would smother negative emotions from exterior forces. It has been used as a powerful charm for self-protection.

Art Of Filigree

Filigree was commonly used in 1920s Art Deco Jewelry. The most common metal used was 18 karat white gold since it was soft enough to mold and strong enough to hold delicate designs. Filigree pieces are still sought after today as the fascination of Art Deco jewelry continues.

Estate Art Deco Onyx and Diamond Earrings

Art Deco

Because of short hair and close-fitting hats (cloche) around the ears, women’s necks were fully exposed in the ‘roaring 20s.’ What better way to highlight one’s style than with earrings that swung, dangled and sparkled?

Onyx

Onyx grew popular in the 1920s and 30s because it could be dressed up or down easily. These earrings evoke a floral yet formal feel, with two large inverted tear drop shaped onyx suspended from a domed flower, whose petals are adorned with rose cut diamonds. It is likely these earrings were only worn in the evenings and on special occasions.

Cushion Cut Diamonds

The top of each earring features antique cushion cut diamonds bezel set in platinum and further set into circles of black onyx for a dramatic contrast. The jeweler was likely trying to mimic designs made popular by Cartier during the Edwardian Era.

Platinum

Silver colored metal was in fashion in this era, but a newly discovered platinum mine in 1924 meant that the wealthy could follow this trend while maintaining their social status. Platinum does not fade, discolor or require re-plating.

Interesting note: Black and white jewelry, known as ‘mourning jewelry’ became popular after the sinking of the Titanic (true story!) These earrings were certainly designed to take multiple trends and combine them into a one-of-a-kind piece.
