How Should Your Ring Fit?

Everyone has different preferences when it comes to the perfect ring fit. Depending on your lifestyle and comfort, you might prefer a tighter or looser fit.

Generally, jewelers find that the best engagement ring fit is when it can slide easily over your knuckle with a little resistance – you want it to be snug but not too tight and comfortable but not too loose!

If you wear rings regularly, consider how your favorite ones fit – and be sure to share this information with your partner or your jeweler!

Is It Possible to Find Out Someone’s Ring Size Without Asking?

Unfortunately, there is no 100% accurate way to guess or secretly measure someone’s ring size. The only guaranteed way to get an accurate size is to visit a reputable jeweler like Nelson Coleman – we have the tools and experience necessary to determine your ring size and how your rings should fit!

However, if you are trying to surprise your partner with an engagement ring, there are a few methods you can use to estimate their ring size. Just know that results may vary, and if you are uncertain, you should always err on the side of a slightly larger ring based on your findings (and a professional opinion) rather than a smaller one to allow for resizing as needed.

Using a Ring Size Chart

Using a printable ring sizing chart may seem like a perfect, easy solution to figuring out your partner’s ring size, but unfortunately, it’s just not that accurate.

We’ve had a number of clients who used online resources or ring size coasters to estimate their size or their partner’s size, only to get wildly inaccurate results. In one case, we saw a client who used a printable chart and ordered a ring that was 4 sizes too big. The ring had to be returned to the manufacturer and was completely remade, as downsizing that ring to the proper size would have compromised the structural integrity and design of the piece.

If you consult just two different ring charts, what you’ll find is that the numbers are often different – using one chart may tell you that your size is closer to a 6 while another site may tell you that you should wear a 5.5. The differences in measurements may seem slight (they’re often off by under a millimeter), but that means that there is no actual size ring size chart you can trust – getting a correct ring size requires the expertise of a professional!

These stock image ring size charts feature different measurements for certain sizes – it’s hard to say which would be more accurate depending on a number of factors, including the width of the band and where the ring sits on your finger.

Using convenient online ring charts, coasters, or kits may be tempting, but they very rarely offer accurate findings – and they could end up costing you a lot of time and money in the long run as a result. If you decide to rely solely on these resources, know that there is no guarantee that the ring you order will fit your partner.

In the rare case that you do find your partner’s actual ring size using one of these resources, that’s great! But this is extremely uncommon, and there’s a great deal of luck involved in these cases – so if you find yourself in this situation, you might even consider buying a lottery ticket to celebrate your good fortune!

At Nelson Coleman Jewelers, you can get your first sizing free, because we want to ensure that you get the perfect ring for your special someone!

How to Determine Ring Size at Home

There are a number of ways you can guess ring size at home, though these measurements are unlikely to be exact. However, if you are looking to simply get an idea of what size your partner wears, these methods are easy ways to get started!

Ring Chart

There is an abundance of downloadable ring charts available online, making it easy to get a rough idea of what size might work for your partner. Simply print out a ring sizing chart and use it to measure an existing ring, one that your partner wears on their ring finger. Take the ring and place it over each circle until you are able to find one that fits directly inside of the band. These charts apply both women’s and men’s ring sizes.

It is crucial when using methods like this to use a ring that your partner wears often on the correct finger. Attempting to size with a ring your partner doesn’t wear or a ring that your partner wears on a different finger will not be useful!

As we discussed earlier, these charts rarely provide an accurate ring size estimate. But if you’re just looking for a place to start, these are an easy way to determine what would fit on your partner’s ring finger.

If you only use a chart, go up a half size before you buy – it’s easier to size a ring down! But if you order a ring more than a size or two too large, it will have to be remade entirely, so we recommend getting as close as you can!

Jewelers’ tools, including a keyring of metal ring sizers

Ring Sizers

Ordering a plastic or metal ring sizer is a relatively affordable and simple way to guess ring size. Just measure your partner’s finger with the rings on the tool, and the ring that fits best will roughly correspond to the size of ring you should buy.

Again, these are not always exact measurements, as there are a number of factors that affect how well rings fit! Professionals will often use similar tools but consider lifestyle factors, jewelry preferences, and the specifics of the ring you want to determine the accurate ring size.

Piece of String

This method is one of the most common ways people estimate ring size at home. All you need is a piece of string and a marker. Wrap string around the base of your partner’s finger (where a ring would typically sit) and use the marker to note on the string where the two ends meet. Unwrap the string, and use a ruler to measure the distance between the two marks. You can then use this measurement to find the ring size on a chart.

We have seen our clients use a variety of similar methods to measure their significant others’ fingers with wildly inaccurate results. Using floss or even washers – anything that can fit over a finger or be adjusted to fit – may give you a rough estimate of a ring size that might work, but it will not be accurate.

As much as we strongly recommend against relying solely on methods like this, our clients ultimately get the final decision. However, this practice can result in rings that are not sized correctly. In cases where the ring is upwards of 2 sizes too small or large, we often have to get the ring remade, as resizing it to fit is not possible at that point.

How to Measure Ring Size With Tape Measure

With a fabric tape measure, you can cut out the middleman and simply measure your partner’s finger in one go. Just wrap the tape measure around the base of the ring finger to determine the approximate width in inches or CM – most ring sizer charts use millimeters for a close fit. You’ll want to make sure that the side you’re referencing is closest to the base of the finger to get the most accurate measurement.

Because rings vary in width and fit, this method, as with the others we’ve described, may provide inaccurate results, but if you’re just getting started and want a general idea of what sizes to consider, this is an easy way to guess ring size!

How to Determine Ring Size Secretly

The magic of a surprise proposal hinges on the smallest details, like getting your partner’s ring size without them knowing! Unfortunately, it’s difficult to get a truly accurate size without taking your partner to a jeweler, but there are a few ways you can get the answer without spoiling the surprise.

A couple talk about engagement rings and ring sizing on a balcony.

Subtlety Ask

If you’re at the stage where you’re thinking about or even talking about getting engaged, it’s probably a safe bet that your significant other has either been sized before (on a whim, of course).

So, in a clever way, bring it up and ask! Tell your partner you are purchasing a ring for a family member and want to use their size as an estimate. You can also mention that you’ve been thinking about getting your own ring size and ask if your partner would be willing to go with you “just for fun.”

Try On One of Her Rings

Now if that doesn’t work, you may have to get a little more creative and figure out your partner’s size from an existing ring. There’s an old trick jewelers use which works well if done right. Simply put one of your partner’s favorite rings on your finger and mark where it stops – make two marks, one on either side of the band, for the most accurate results!

A jeweler can measure that part of your finger and get a decent estimate of the size of that particular ring. If you are using this estimate, you may want to go up a size when you order the ring, just to be safe – a jeweler will be able to resize the ring to fit perfectly!

Each finger is typically a different size, so make sure to use a ring that your partner actually wears on the ring finger!

Send Her Friends on a Mission

If your partner doesn’t wear rings or you want to determine the exact size, recruit your partner’s friends for help!

Have a friend take your partner to the mall and just happen to stop by a store to get sized. While the friend is getting her finger measured, she can encourage your partner to do the same.

They can also window shop for engagement rings while at the store. The friend could point out a few rings she really likes and your significant other is sure to mention a few settings that catch their eye. When the friend reports back to you, you’ll not only have an accurate ring size, but you’ll know what ring settings your partner likes, too!

When in Doubt, Go Big!

If all else fails, go with the stock ring size. Stock sizes are right around 6.5 for women and 10 for men. The most common ring sizes for women are between 5 and 7 (and for men, the average is around a 10), so there is a good chance the stock size will fit.

If you’re not sure that the stock size will fit, go a little big! Resizing a ring is a simple procedure that can be done quickly by any experienced jeweler. So simply guess the size, go a size larger, and the ring can be sized down to fit your partner’s finger perfectly.

What to Expect During a Ring Sizing at Nelson Coleman Jewelers

When you come in for a ring sizing, one of our experienced jewelers will help you find the right size. We’ll measure your finger and help you try on different rings to find the perfect fit. We want you to be comfortable with your purchase, so we’ll take our time and answer any questions you have.

Lifestyle Questions

In order to get an accurate sizing, our jewelers will ask you questions about your lifestyle and personal preferences to ensure we offer the best recommendations. Some of our clients, for example, don’t like having any level of resistance when the ring passes over their knuckles, but we typically recommend having some resistance for security’s sake, as the skin on your hands is exposed to elements that can affect how the ring fits throughout the day.

Rest assured – there is no judgment on our end when we ask these types of questions! We just want you to make the most informed decision so that you don’t have to return for unnecessary repairs or resizing later on. We want to see you in our store again for the right reasons, not because you’re unhappy!

What to Know About Resizing Rings

If you are planning on purchasing a ring for yourself or your partner, we want you to feel confident that you have the correct size. The only way to be certain of your partner’s ring size is to have them come to our store to be sized. However, we can also help you determine your partner’s approximate size so that we can best accommodate resizing if necessary after you pop the question!

You’ll want to get as close as possible to your partner’s correct ring size to ensure a proper fit, but we also want to let our clients know that, in most cases, rings are designed to be sized and can often be sized multiple times without jeopardizing the integrity of the item! This may not always be the case with estate pieces or really thin bands, but generally speaking, we can adjust rings to improve their fit.

We typically recommend erring on the slightly larger size when uncertain, as it’s often easier to size down a ring, but having an accurate estimate of your partner’s size will reduce the risk of having to get the ring remade.

Ordering a ring without getting sized by your jeweler means there is a chance that you will not get the size correct. If the ring is upwards of 2 sizes too big or small, we may not be able to size it accurately without damaging the piece.

How Much Will It Cost to Resize an Engagement Ring?

In cases where we have worked with you to identify your ring size and have gotten close to the correct size for your preferences, we can typically resize the piece without much difficulty and at no extra charge.

However, if you bring us a ring that needs to be sized due to something we advised against (such as estimating ring size using online resources alone), resizing will incur additional costs.

How to Prepare for a Ring Sizing

Before coming in, we recommend that you have an idea in mind of the style of ring you want to purchase. Elements such as the width of the ring can affect how it fits and what size you actually decide on; for example, wider bands displace more skin and may feel tighter than a ring with a narrower band. When you come to us with more information on what you’re looking for regarding ring style and desired fit, we’ll be able to size you more accurately for fit and comfort!

When you visit us for a ring sizing, it’s important that you feel as normal as possible – avoid getting sized if your fingers are swollen at all, if you’re dehydrated, or if you feel off. How a ring fits can vary depending on a number of factors, so it’s best to get sized on a day where you are feeling well.

Most of the time, our jewelers will use sizers attached to a keyring to determine your ring size; because these rings hold all of the sizers we have to work with, there can be a bit of weight involved when you put it on, and we can also use loose sizers if you’d prefer that.

We want our clients to understand that sizing is a process. In the case of an engagement ring, we’re working with something that you will be wearing throughout the day, every day, so personal preference and comfort will have an impact on the ring’s fit. Even after we size you and you receive the ring, you may have to visit us again to get it adjusted once you have a chance to wear it and get a feel for the piece.

Frequently Asked Questions About Determining Someone’s Ring Size

There is no guaranteed way to guess someone’s ring size, but there are a few methods that may work. You can try borrowing one of her rings and taking it to a jeweler to have it sized, or ask her friends or family if they know what size she wears.

If all else fails, you can always go with a stock size (around 6.5 for women and 10 for men) and have the ring resized if needed – remember that it is better to go slightly larger if you think the average size may not fit, as it is easier to size down than up!

Guessing someone’s ring size will likely provide you with inaccurate results, but certain methods will allow you to get fairly close. The only surefire way to know someone’s ring size is to have a professional jeweler measure their finger!

The accuracy of your estimate really depends on the method you use. If you try to guess the size or use a ring sizing chart, your estimate will likely be inaccurate. However, if you borrow one of your partner’s rings (that you know they wear comfortably on the correct finger) and have it sized by a professional, your estimate will be much more accurate!

The only way to ensure you get the correct size, however, is by getting your partner sized by a professional jeweler.

Rings are commonly measured in millimeters, and these measurements correspond to ring sizes which typically range from 3 to upwards of 14. Ring sizes are largely unisex, though the fit of rings designed for men and women may vary.

The average female ring size is approximately a size 6, but it is always best to get an accurate measurement to ensure the perfect fit. Stock ring sizes are usually 6.5. Some rings are available in quarter sizes, as well, making it crucial to get properly sized before ordering a ring!

The average ring size for women is between 5 and 7, but some women may fall outside of this range. It is always best to get an accurate measurement before ordering a ring!

For men, ring sizes typically range from 8 and 15 in most rings.

The process of calculating the correct ring size for men is the same as it is for anyone! For the most accurate results, men should visit a jeweler to get sized. This is especially important when choosing wedding bands — you’ll want your ring to fit comfortably if you’ll be wearing it daily!

It is difficult to determine the accurate size of a ring based solely on the circumference of someone’s finger, especially because you may not know exactly where the measurement was taken or how wide the band of the desired ring will be. However, you can estimate that a ring with an inner circumference of 3 inches would correspond to a ring around size 15 1/2. Please schedule a professional ring sizing before ordering any rings based on this type of calculation.

A ring between the sizes of 10.5 and 11 would likely fit around a finger’s circumference of 2.5 inches, but it is best to get professionally sized to ensure you choose a ring size that will fit comfortably.

Ring sizes are generally considered unisex, so a size 10 men’s ring would also be a size 10 for a woman! Most rings designed for men have a wider band, so the fit may be different compared to most rings for women, even if the size is technically the same.

Without a professional ring sizing, there is no surefire way to determine someone’s ring size. However, you can estimate ring size by using a number of different methods, including wrapping a piece of string or a fabric tape measure around the correct finger and measuring the length. If purchasing a ring based on these ring size guessing methods, we recommend sizing up to allow for easier resizing if needed, as these practices are not guaranteed to provide accurate results!
