This estate 9k yellow gold charm measures approximately 7/8" by 7/16" and weighs 2.5 grams. Dating to the 1970s, the charm is designed as a small rectangular box with a glass front that displays a folded British ten shilling note, its red-brown engraved pattern and bold “10” visible through the window. The side of the box is engraved “Break Glass in Emergency,” and a jump ring allows it to hang from a bracelet or chain. The charm carries British assay marks for 1975.
“Emergency money” charms were a popular novelty in Britain, offering a playful nod to keeping a little cash tucked away for a rainy day. The ten shilling note became a piece of history when Britain moved to decimal currency in 1971, and the note was withdrawn from circulation, so this charm preserves a small piece of the pre-decimal era. It makes a fun, conversation-starting gift for collectors of British memorabilia, charm bracelet enthusiasts, or anyone who appreciates jewelry with a sense of humor.
