AMANDA COLEMAN-PHELPS, 6th Generation Owner and President

Once Upon a Time...

Our story began in 1856, when jeweler and watchmaker Adolph Doederlein opened a jewelry shop along the bustling cobble-lined streets of Munich, Bavaria. He was renowned not only for his exquisite craftsmanship but also as the “Keeper of the Clocks” appointed by the royal court of Munich.

A Fresh Start

In 1906, Adolph's son Ludwig opened a store in Baltimore’s premier shopping districts, including East Baltimore Street in 1911. As the business grew, it moved to a larger space at Park and Lexington in 1917. At this location, the third generation, Carl Doederlein, joined the family business. In 1930 Carl took the helm and renamed the company under The Carl J. Doederlein Company. He was joined by his daughter, Virginia Doederlein. Virginia married actor and artist Nelson Coleman, who took the reins of the family business. In 1960 he was joined by his eldest son Nelson Coleman III, later to be joined by sons Mark and Chris Coleman.

Mark and Chris, our fifth-generation members, bring a unique blend of strengths to the family business. Mark excels in fostering deep customer connections, particularly in estate jewelry, while Chris prioritizes operational efficiency and community support, contributing significantly to our company's success and positive impact. Peggy Coleman, who joined Nelson Coleman Jewelers through marriage to Chris, revolutionized our inventory and merchandise department with her discerning purchasing skills, excellent vendor connections, and a keen eye for fashion. Her expertise played a pivotal role in the thriving success of our business.

Carrying on the legacy

In 2014 history was made again, as Amanda Coleman-Phelps became the first female owner in the business’s long history. With her extensive knowledge and expertise in the industry, Amanda Coleman-Phelps is poised to lead Nelson Coleman Jewelers to new heights while staying true to the family’s commitment to providing personalized service, exceptional quality and inviting environment. As the sixth generation of Colemans to take the helm, she continues to honor the legacy of those who came before her while carving out a path for the next generation of jewelers to follow.
