This estate French silver chatelaine coin purse measures approximately 3" long by 2 3/16" wide and weighs 34.4 grams. Dating to the 1890s, it features an arched hinged frame engraved with ivy leaves and scrolling vines set against a darkened, oxidized ground. The frame suspends a finely woven interlocking ring mesh body finished with a looped fringe along the bottom edge. A ball finial kiss-lock closure keeps the purse securely shut, and a suspension ring at the top allows it to be worn from a chatelaine. The purse is stamped with the boar’s head mark of the Paris Assay Office on the stems of the snap closure, guaranteeing a minimum of 80% silver purity, and is also stamped “Déposé” on the top of the frame, indicating a patented design.
Chatelaine purses were fashionable accessories in the late 19th century, worn suspended from the waist so a lady could keep coins and small essentials close at hand. Ivy was a favorite motif of the period because, as an evergreen, it symbolizes lasting bonds of friendship and romantic devotion. The contrast between the bright silver leaves and the oxidized background brings out the fine detail of the engraving, while the flexible chainmail body shows the skilled handwork that went into these pieces.
Fine French silver represents exceptional value for collectors seeking true period craftsmanship with documented hallmarks. This estate chatelaine coin purse appeals to collectors of antique silver, Victorian-era accessories, and pieces with meaningful symbolism. Add this charming French silver ivy purse to your collection today.
