Crafted in 14kt yellow gold, this estate flower ring from the 1960's features six oval cabochon opals measuring approximately 5.5 x 3.3mm, totaling approximately 0.97 tcw. The opals form the petals around a round brilliant cut diamond center of approximately 0.09 ct, measuring 2.9mm, H-I color and SI2 clarity. Each stone is prong set within a textured gold wire frame, and polished gold bead accents ring the outer edge of the open, domed setting. The textured shoulders taper into a smooth band. Size 6, with a total weight of 5.5 grams. Stamped 14K.
Opal is known for its play-of-color, the flashes of spectral color that appear as light moves across the stone. This effect comes from the gem's internal structure of tiny silica spheres, which diffract light into the colors seen at the surface. Here, the milky white opals show soft flashes of color that shift as the hand moves, set off by the bright white sparkle of the diamond at the center. Because opal is softer than many gemstones, it is best worn with some care and kept away from hard knocks, household chemicals, and sudden changes in temperature.
With its open, layered construction and petal-like arrangement, this ring is a lovely addition for collectors of mid-century gold jewelry. It also makes a thoughtful gift for an October birthday or for anyone drawn to the gentle color of opal.
