Van Cleef and Arpels
The Van Cleef and Arpels story began with founders Alfred Van Cleef, the son of a stone cutter, marrying Estelle Arpels, the daughter of a precious stone dealer. Together they took their passion for fine jewelry and precious stones and went into business in 1896. Van Cleef & Arpels opened their first store in 1906.
The Alhambra
In 1968 the design house introduced the iconic Alhambra necklace. The Van Cleef & Arpels Alhambra gets its name from the famous 8th-century Moorish palace, fortress, and citadel located in Granada, Spain, whose archways resemble a quatrefoil design. The motif shapes are reminiscent of a four-leaf clover with beaded edges. The piece became immediately emblematic of style, sophistication and celebrity. Elizabeth Taylor and Princess Grace of Monaco were among some of its biggest fans.
Good Luck
Jaques Arpels once said, “To be lucky you have to believe in luck.” He was fond of including symbols of luck in his designs and the four leaf clover epitomizes good luck. The Alhambra has been revived in almost every decade since its inception. Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, is reportedly a big fan.
