Estate Victorian Scottish Dirk Pin With Citrine and Agate
The Scottish Dirk
A Dirk is defined as a dagger with a straight blade. The Scottish Dirk, also referred to as the “Highland Dirk” was a traditional symbol and ceremonial weapon used by Highland Officers and later worn by pipers and drummers of the Scottish Highland regiments.
Scottish Citrine
The warm yellowish-brown variety of citrine used to adorn this pin was traditionally mined in the Cairngorm Mountain range in Scotland. Cairngorms were customarily used in Scottish jewelry such as kilt ornaments and brooches made during the Victorian period.
Pebble Jewelry
A variety of agates can be found throughout central and western Scotland. Antique Scottish jewelry made using Cairngorm and agates is also referred to as “pebble” jewelry. The use of agates in jewelry dates back to the middle of the 19th century and are most commonly seen in brooches, pendants, bracelets and other pieces, making them popular collectors items.
